What a crack actually costs you

The cosmetics are the least of it. A pane that has opened, however fine the line, has stopped being a closed surface: a boil-over runs into the break rather than sitting on it, and what is underneath was never meant to be rained on. Every heating cycle then works at the break.

So the question is not whether the top still cooks. It usually does. A crack does not by itself produce a dead induction zone, and the two turn up together seldom enough to be treated as separate findings. What it does is put an end date on the appliance; the question is how far off.

Why the pane is rarely sold the way people expect

Wolf publishes an induction line and an electric one, and this page covers the pane on either: coils under the glass or radiant elements, it is the same part and the same argument.

Owners picture a sheet of glass dropped into a frame. Sometimes that is what arrives. Elsewhere it comes bonded to its frame, or to the control surface printed on it, and the part on the shelf is most of a cooktop with a figure to match. Which you have is a property of your model, so it gets looked up rather than guessed at — which is why the model designation comes before any figure does.

When a crack ends the cooktop

Three shapes finish a top. One that crosses a zone marking, where the surface takes the most punishment. One that reaches an edge or the cut-out, where the pane is actually held. And any break with a piece that moves, lifts or grits under a cloth.

The cracked tops we are called out to in Mar Vista mostly arrive the same way: something heavy came down out of a cupboard onto a cold pane. Cold glass and a corner-first landing is the combination that opens it.

What we do before quoting

Three things, in this order. The model designation and the part number, so the choice between a pane and an assembly stops being a guess. The frame, the clips and the seal around the cut-out, since a shifted pane takes its mounting with it. Then the zone under the damage, metered against one never touched.

Only then is there a figure worth giving you, and the same visit carries a cooktop repair quote for whatever else is wrong with the top.
